Yucky tasting tap water reported by Metro Vancouver residents [Oct - Nov 2025]

Some residents of Metro Vancouver have been complaining about a moldy taste and musty smell in their tap water over the past few weeks. [Oct – Nov 2025]
Metro Vancouver confirms that
a compound called geosmin has been detected in water sourced from the Seymour reservoir.

The City of Vancouver’s water quality department says: “Geosmin is a harmless, naturally occurring compound produced by bacteria in soil and algae that can lead to an earthy or musty taste and odour in water. Geosmin levels in the Seymour Reservoir are being monitored and are expected to decline over time. In the meantime, Metro Vancouver has adjusted reservoir operations to reduce the portion of regional water coming from Seymour Reservoir to mitigate unpleasant taste and odour.”

The Greater Vancouver Water District, responsible for supplying water to Metro Vancouver, says: “…The water is safe to drink. While the odour and/or taste may be different than usual, the water is continually tested and meets federal guidelines for drinking water quality and the provincial Drinking Water Protection Regulation.
This rare occurrence of changes in odour/or taste is possibly due to natural seasonal changes in the Capilano and Seymour reservoirs. This may include lower reservoir levels and recent heavy rain that stirred up organic materials. Metro Vancouver is actively monitoring the situation.
Updates will be posted here and on Metro Vancouver’s social media channels.”

Makes one glad to have a good water filter!

The City of Vancouver has spent $19 million on logging Stanley Park. There is no basis in science to justify what the City is doing. The City made a deal with one forestry contractor, involving $19 million dollars, without getting a second opinion and without input from the public. The logging contracts were awarded to the same outfit that "assessed" the park and made the recommendations to log the trees.
Moreover, money paid to the contractor was obtained secretly... transactions that were only discovered because of a lawsuit launched by the Stanley Park Preservation Society in an effort to stop the logging.
