Shungite for Water

Shungite has been used for centuries in Russia for purifying and imparting beneficial properties to water.

Shungite water is a wonderful rinse for skin and hair. It is also useful for birds, animals, aquariums and plants.

  • HOW TO PREPARE SHUNGITE WATER
    Cleaning the shungite chips
Sterilize your new shungite chips in boiling water for 10 minutes. Cool, and then rinse thoroughly. Don’t use soap.

Making your first batch of shungite water
Place the well-rinsed shungite chips in a 2 litre glassor ceramic container (no metal or plastic). Fill with filtered or tap water.

    1. For regular shungite chips
Use 2 litres of water for 200g of well-rinsed shungite chips. Let the water dwell with the shungite for 24-72 hours to acquire the beneficial properties of the shungite. The container must be open to breathe during this process. A thin, natural fibre cloth can be used to cover the container to exclude dust and insects.

    2. For elite shungite chips
Use 1 litre of water for 30g of well-rinsed elite shungite chips.
Ready to use after 24 hours.
Ready after 12 hours if 60 grams are used.
The container must be open to breathe during this process. A thin, natural fibre cloth can be used to cover the container to exclude dust and insects.

    Using shungite-infused water
Pour the shungite-infused water into another lidded glass or ceramic container. This is the finished water that you will use. Refill the original shungite container with water to prepare a new batch as above.

In Russia, shungite water is used therapeutically. It is not typically used on a full time basis. Work up to using 2-3 glasses of shungite water per day.
Shungite water is great for skin and hair, and for minor wounds. Pets and plants respond well to this water.

    Maintenance
Once per month, put the shungite chips outside to recharge in the sun for an hour. Sterilize the container at regular intervals. Replace the shungite chips with new chips approximately every 1- 2 years, depending on the quality of the source water.

    Regular or elite shungite?
Regular shungite chips are the type most often used for making shungite-infused water. Experiment with using either type of shungite chips (regular or 'elite') to find out which type suits your purposes best.

  • Why are my hands black after handling shungite?
Shungite contains carbon. New shungite pieces (especially if unpolished) may still have some loose carbon dust on the surface of the stone. Although a bit messy a first, this carbon dust is not harmful (in fact, quite the contrary). The loose carbon will wash and rub off. After some handling, the product will no longer leave any black residue. This is simply part of 'breaking in' any new shungite product.

What’s the difference between ‘elite’ shungite and regular shungite?
Elite shungite is also known as ‘silver’, ‘noble’ or ‘bright’ shungite. It has a glassy black metallic look and is lighter in weight than regular shungite. It displays small orange inclusions of pyrite. It is brittle, fractures easily and is available in unformed chunks. Although it is mined from the same area in the Russian republic of Karelia, elite shungite is much rarer, and considerably more expensive, than regular shungite.

Elite shungite is approximately 98% carbon – of a type that is loaded with fullerene molecules, which account for its potent properties. Regular shungite contains 30 - 60% carbon. It typically has whitish veins or spots of silicate minerals and is much more common and plentiful than elite shungite.
