How do modern screens compare to the light from the sun?
Blue light from the sun only makes up about 14% of the spectrum and is ALWAYS present with red and infrared light.
Computer screens emit around 35% blue light and is not complemented with the protective red/IR frequencies.
What is the role of blue light within the human body?
Blue light tells your body that it's daytime and starts your internal clock. When exposed to blue light near the end of the day, especially after sunset, your internal clock and circadian rhythm will drift off course. A cascade of misalignments will occur because of the unnatural state that the blue light has created and the bodily processes that should be occurring at night will be off or missing entirely.
The science runs deep...
Blue light triggers your sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) when present outside of morning hours and without the full, non-polarized, spectrum of sun light accompanying it. Prolonged stress from blue light destroys the necessary docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the eyes and skin, thereby disrupting the electron transport chain to the mitochondria of your cells. Blue light also prevents the production of melanin which affects your sleep cycles and the body's ability to heal properly.
Why does screen flicker matter?
Flickering light can cause massive disruptions in the brain. Bucha's Effect (flicker vertigo) is induced by bright and intense light that is pulsed. Even though you can't see the flicker from a screen with the naked eye, overtime the impacts may become more obvious.
