Best replacement filter options for your Berkey (& other gravity filter systems)

To maintain the quality of your drinking water the filters inside your Berkey system should be replaced at regular intervals. With proper care, your stainless steel Berkey housing can last for a lifetime.

However, Berkey has stopped producing Black Berkey replacement elements due to a stop-sale order issued by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency USA).

After an extensive search we found the best replacement filter options to use with your Berkey.
These replacement filters have been more rigorously tested than the Black Berkey elements.
They also fit inside other gravity filter brands such as British Berkefeld, ProOne, and Alexapure.
And, they require NO priming!

If NO fluoride is added to your tap water...

Use a set of two filters, from one of the following two options, in the upper chamber of your Berkey or gravity filter system:

Coldstream FTO Plus ceramic gravity purifiers (shown above)
These are larger filters with faster rate of production than the Ultra Sterasyls.

                                                  OR

Ultra Sterasyl ceramic gravity filters (shown above)
These are smaller filters with slower rate of production.
However, they are more economically priced.

Both of these filter options (shown above) have a ceramic shell with carbon interior, come with comprehensive test data, are scrubbable, require no priming, are made in the UK, and both filters (sets of 2) should be replaced after approximately one year of use.

If your tap water is treated with fluoride...

Use a set of two Coldstream FTO Plus replacement ceramic gravity filters in the upper chamber of your Berkey.
These filters are made in the UK and come with comprehensive test data against a broad range of contaminants, including fluoride.
They are an all-in-one replacement for both the Black Berkey elements and the Berkey PF-2 fluoride elements.

Another option is a set of two Ultra Fluoride ceramic replacement filters made by British Berkefeld.
However, the Ultra Fluoride filters are significantly more expensive and come with limited test data for a narrow range of contaminants.

Fluoride is difficult to remove from drinking water and will quickly exhaust the capacity of a filter to intercept it.
To maintain fluoride reduction, filters should be replaced at frequent intervals depending on gallons used.
Check the test data for the filter you are using to calculate your changeout frequency based on how much water you are running through your filters.
